How do you pronounce Storgé?
Storge is a greek word for love. It is pronounced as store-gay. Storge is the unique love that flows between a parent and child.
I have a strong belief that names matter. The names we give our children, the labels we put on people, and the names we give our passions. I even changed my fifth child’s name when he was a month old because it just did not fit who he was. I have given my small business a name that tells the story of how I imagine most parents experience breastfeeding and how I experienced breastfeeding.
When I was breastfeeding my fifth son, who at the time was about 14 months old, he suddenly stopped nursing, sat up, and gave me a big slobbery, milky kiss. My heart swelled with love. I experienced storge in a very real, powerful moment. This moment gave birth to what I would set as the foundation of my lactation practice: love, storge.
I realized in that moment just how much breastfeeding meant to him. It’s easy to identify our own emotions about breastfeeding. We rarely get a chance to understand what our babies feel about the whole deal. They cry, we latch them, they poop. It seems very transactional. But when my son consciously chose to stop feeding to kiss me, I realized that breastfeeding is more than just a nutritional transaction. Your baby loves you, loves your milk, loves the warmth of your tummy against her tummy. Your baby falls in love with you each and every day.
Breastfeeding is a beautiful way to fall in love with your baby and for your baby to fall in love with you.
Storgé Lactation has been established on the idea that breastfeeding is an expression of love, in addition to an important part of infant health and nutrition, maternal health, and public health.
Let’s fall in love with breastfeeding!
